Young children learn best through play and interaction with the people who love them. Screens cannot replace that.

What the guidance says

The World Health Organization recommends no sedentary screen time for children under 2. For children aged 2 to 4, it recommends no more than one hour a day. Less is better.

Easy swaps that work

  • Instead of a show during cooking, give your child pots, spoons and a safe task to help with.
  • Instead of a phone in the car, sing songs or play "I spy".
  • Instead of a tablet at bedtime, share a picture book and talk about the pictures.
  • Instead of cartoons in the morning, set out blocks, crayons or play dough.

Make play easy to start

  • Keep a small basket of toys within reach, and rotate them weekly.
  • Use everyday items: boxes, cups, water and cushions.
  • Join in for just ten minutes a day, and let your child lead.
Remember: change takes time. Reduce screen time gradually, and celebrate small wins.
